40.51a - Intercultural competence: How can I work more successfully with international students and colleagues

The internationalisation of Higher Education is increasing the cultural diversity of its students and staff in our institutions. How does this challenge us? We need to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that constitute intercultural competence to help us communicate more successfully in such an environment. This course will help you deal with interactions with students and colleagues from different cultural backgrounds.
Day 1: Exploring ‘culture’ and developing your Intercultural competencies
- The challenges of a culturally diverse classroom
- Cultural Self-Awareness - reflecting on our own culture and our cultural assumptions
- Reflecting on our own educational cultures and our self-concept as educators
- Critical incidents from classroom experience.
Day 2: Applying intercultural competencies to your educational context
- Understanding the experience of international students
- Developing inclusive teaching practices for all
- Helping students understand expectations in your institution, e.g. how to work and learn independently and collaboratively, how to develop critical thinking skills and how to work more effectively in multi-cultural groups
- Developing intercultural learning in your students so they work more effectively with each other and become prepared for the global workplace.

- Explore your own knowledge, skills and attitudes about your own and other cultures
- Develop ideas on how to adjust your classroom practice so you can work more effectively with students from diverse backgrounds
- Develop strategies to help your students become more interculturally competent.
